The #Hashtag: What It Is and How To Use It

Hashtags can be used by any professional on social media. Here are some of the more general hashtags I use for my law firm's posts:

#attorney #attorneys #attorneyatlaw #lawyer #lawyers #lawyered #esq #lawlife #lawyerlife #lawschools #lawstudent #lawfirm ...and the list goes on.

What exactly is a #hashtag?

The #hashtag was originally a creation of Twitter and one of the aspects that catapulted that platform to the top of the social media world quickly. One of the keys to accessing a new audience on Instagram and building your follower list is the appropriate use of the hashtag. The hashtags help organize and categorize images and video content, which aids the process of

content discovery and optimization. Failure to use hashtags will render your content almost private, and defeat the purpose of your presence on the platform in the first place.

The great thing about social media platforms, such as Instagram, is the search feature you can use to explore hashtags and their popularity or density:

There are a number of online tools you can use to explore relevant hashtags and determine related hashtags and their density. You want the hashtags you utilize to be popular enough that others are using them and therefore will come across your content and potentially expand your brand.

I've already outlined a list of general hashtags for lawyers above, here's

a bunch more with some specific tags for the specialists out there:

Once you have identified your niche, explore the popular hashtag and you will see hashtags others are using. You will very quickly be able to develop a cache of hashtags you can use for each post.
